Coil - group 2

1.0 The start:

At the start of the coil project we were instructed to make a group contract and it can be seen below, this was all done in week 36 and 37.

Guidelines for the group

• Expectations of each other.
• Smile at each other

After that, Ida was the most proactive of us in contacting the students that were delegated to us as “our” students. And thereafter she set up a meeting date.

2.0 Preparation for the meeting and the execution of it:

In the weeks 37 and 38 of this calendar year all the group members prepared questions they believed would be useful to present to the Indian students. There was an overlap on the majority of the questions but Deependra was the one that had the most amount of questions that were still good questions. During the meeting the Indian students seemed quite shy and or reserved. Some of our group members were also quite shy, and Jørgen generally led the meeting being the one who asked the questions of the Indians. Half way through the meeting, about 10 minutes in, Ida asked if the Indians had any questions from us. Their questions seemed to more so be about the phenomenon of “snow” and how to say “hello” and “goodbye” in the norwegian language. Thereafter we continued the meeting. Jørgen was the transcriber for the meeting also, but due to variable microphone quality and some difficulty understanding their accents true transcription got substituted for the gist of what they said. These were the questions we asked and the answers we received.

What languages do you speak? Mother tongue? Dialects? Other languages you understand? Are you encouraged to speak your mother tongue or is it frowned upon?

We use both english and mizo which is a language that is native to the north east of india.

When you talk what do you talk with eachother what language do you use?:

English mostly or local shared languages.

Where did you grow up? Who did you live with? What traditions did your family have?

Common to live with grandparents. Divorce is uncommon.

What holidays do you celebrate? How are they celebrated especially in a school setting?

Teachers day and christmas and new years aswell. Not really any others.

What dishes are typical in your family/culture?

Combine different cuisines. North east eats a lot of chinese food. The student kind of joked that north eastern cuisine kind of is chinese.

Are you used to direct or indirect communication? Body language? Eye contact?

Authority figures get less direct, less authority figures get less direct communication. Aslo depends on the problem and its severity.

Do you have any class system in your community? If yes, what groups/class do you belong to?

Not in the north east, but in new dehli there is a fair bit.

At what age do students normally start college or university?

18 to 22 is normal

Is college free, or do students pay tuition fees? If yes, Is it normal to get academic scholarships if you are in a top percentile of performers academically?

Financially burdensome.

Do students usually live at home or move away to study?

Moves away for taking a university degree.

Is it common to take a master's degree? Why or why not?

60 to 70% go to university. most go for bachelors.

Is it very strict? Talking in class, how much is allowed? Being late?

Very strict, be quiet during class. No talking, 75% attendance requirement. Document each time you were away from that 75%.

School clothes, uniform or students choose.

They use uniform and it is enforced. At all levels.

In addition to this we felt that the Indians didn’t necessarily have anything prepared for us due to their lines of questions not being the same as ours or close to ours. No judgment on their part.

3.0 The feedback to the professors:

The group somewhat felt that there seemed to either be no instruction for the Indian students and maybe no “gain”. That they were asked asked or forced to just show up and answer questions. It somewhat felt like a powerinbalance between us and them. Also it feels like it is somewhat unclear what this project has to do with the curriculum and the exam.
